Times Up – A new fight but old cause-By Himanshi Bisht

#TimesUp is a campaign which was initiated in Hollywood after the the Alianza Nacional de Campesinas sent a letter to the Hollywood stating sexual abuse allegations against Hollywood’s renowned producer Harvey Weinstein. That letter mentioned that Harbert Weinstein sexually abused numerous women active in Hollywood. And also that letter was signed by 700,000 farmworkers in the United States. This letter was further published in The New York Times on January 1, 2018. And after the allegations were proved, the Hollywood industry boycotted the producer. And since that many Hollywood actresses, female staff working in the industry came forward and expressed their voice against him.
The #TimesUp campaign saw further support in the form of this year’s Golden Globe Awards were majority of the attendees wore Black Dress to symbolise the dark side of the Hollywood. Also at that event, all the winners proudly and boldly spoke against the abuse and saluted the womanhood. The same thing happened in this year’s Grammy Awards where the attendees wore White Rose or all White dresses to support the cause and speak about the solidarity.
After this movement became a huge issue among the masses and many actresses who are fighting legally against Harvey Weinstein, famous producer Shonda Rhimes, Reese Witherspoon and 300 other prominent women came forward and aim to fund these women for legal aids. Also actor Mark Wahlberg donated all his earnings from his movie All the Money in the World for this cause.
This movement has now also started in Bollywood after many actresses and actors have commented about Casting Couch. Actors like Ranveer Singh, Richa Chadda etc have spoken about the ongoing culture of Casting Couch that has been prevailing for a very long time. Now even South Industry has also come out and have shared their experiences as well.
Let’s hope that this initiative gets great response in Bollywood as well as like it got in Hollywood.
