Delhi Air Pollution: ‘Every kid having breathing problem’, city tops list of global pollution

New Delhi: Delhi Air Pollution News: While the national capital has been witnessing rise in air pollution, the Delhi high court on Wednesday stated that forest department bears responsibility for the air quality and that they should take measures to improve the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the region. Notably, Delhi has become the world’s most polluted city, as per the report compiled by Swiss group IQAir.

Justice Jasmeet Singh also noted that children have been suffering from asthma as they are inhaling polluted air. Therefore, the court expressed concern that there was an encroachment in the ridge area, which is said to be the lungs of the national capital.

The court later directed the principal secretary of the forest department to act quickly and speed up the process of filling vacancies. It further stated, “You are responsible for quality of air we breathe. It is your obligation to ensure AQI comes down.” It also stated, “Every kid is having breathing problem. (In) December-January, people have to travel out when it is the best time to be here.”

The court also said that people in Delhi have a fundamental right to clean air to breathe. It also asserted that greenery plays a crucial role in achieving this.

It is pertinent to mention that there are several areas, such as Nehru Nagar (402), Sonia Vihar (412), Rohini (403), Wazirpur (422), Bawana (403), Mundka (407), Anand Vihar (422), and New Moti Bagh (435), that have experienced a drastic fall in air quality, which has reached to the ‘severe’ category.
