pressBhubneshwar-Indian Hockey captain Manpreet Singh (L) and coach Sjoerd Marijne (R) attend a press conference on the eve of their match against Australia at Men’s Hockey World League Final at Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Thursday. However, Australia levelled the score in the next minute by converting a penalty corner.Missed chances continued to haunt India as they wasted two more penalty corners minutes into the second half.Akashdeep Singh could have given India the lead in the 17th minute as he met a crisp cross and with only the goalkeeper Tyler Lovell to beat but he ended up hitting the ball on to the onrushing Australian custodian.
Mandeep Singh put India in lead when he scored five minutes into the second quarter. Manpreet, who made his worldwide debut in 2011, said “I think every match I play for India is special because it’s a matter of pride for me to represent my country”.
India got out of the phase of inactivity as they got a penalty corner in the 52nd minute.Thereafter, Australia earned another penalty corner when Amit Rohidas was found guilty of high stick inside his own circle but the Indian defence stood tall to thwart the danger and go into the breather locked at one goal apiece.Germany’s Die Honamas were in action against England- a team that had beaten Germany to the bronze medal at the Rabo Euro Hockey Championships in Amsterdam earlier this year – in the opening match of the day, and left the field rightfully pleased with their afternoon’s work.”We got several chances throughout the game to create goals”. It proved to be the last significant moment of the match, with both sides taking away a share of the spoils on the occasion of Indian team captain Manpreet Singh’s 200th senior worldwide appearance. But it was equalised soon after when Jeremy Hayward converted a penalty corner for Australia (21st minute).
Earlier in the inaugural match on Friday, Germany defeated England 2-0 to start their campaign in a dominating fashion.
The two goals in the match came in the second quarter in back-to-back minutes.
