BJP to contest on 51 wards, SAD on 29 in MC Jalandhar election

SAD-BJP CARTOONJalandhar – Following SAD-BJP state leadership’s directions, the BJP Jalandhar leaders Saturday announced to contest Municipal Corporation (MC) Jalandhar elections on 51 seats while SAD would contest on 29 seats. SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal and BJP Punjab president cum Union Minister of State Vijay Sampla during the joint coordination committee meeting on Friday had announced that the MC elections in Jalandhar would be contested jointly as per old the existing seat sharing formula.Jalandhar MC Elections: BJP to contest on 51 wards, SAD on 29A joint meeting of SAD-BJP district leaders held in Jalandhar on Saturday, where Akalis were led by senior Akali leader and former SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur and the BJP was led by ex-minister Manoranjan Kalia and other senior leaders. As per the seat sharing formula after the delimitation process in Jalandhar MC, the number of wards has gone up to 80 in the four urban constituencies namely Jalandhar Cantonment, Jalandhar West, Jalandhar North and Jalandhar Central. Earlier, Jalandhar MC had 60 wards.Jalandhar MC Elections: BJP to contest on 51 wards, SAD on 29Senior BJP leader and ex-local bodies minister Manoranjan Kalia announced that the BJP would contest on ward number 2, 3, 7, 9, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 24, 33, 34, 35, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 46, 48, 49, 50, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 60, 61, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 73, 75, 76, 77, 78 and 80. Bibi Jagir Kaur accompanied by SAD Jalandhar urban unit’s new president Kulwant Singh Mannan announced that SAD would contest on 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 21, 23, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 36, 44, 45, 47, 51, 59, 62, 72, 74, 79 wards. Both the parties were yet to announce its candidates.Jalandhar MC Elections: BJP to contest on 51 wards, SAD on 29Interestingly, the BJP leaders and councilors were demanding atleast 64 seats out of the total 80 wards in Jalandhar. BJP district president Ramesh Sharma had announced that the BJP was an urban party and had its base in the cities while the SAD was a rural party, hence the demand. Former minister Manoranjan Kalia said that state party leadership’s decision was final in this matter. “SAD-BJP would contest the MC polls together”, he said. Bibi Jagir Kaur said that the SAD-BJP was geared up to contest the civic body polls. “The party would announce the names of the candidates shortly”, she said.Jalandhar MC Elections: BJP to contest on 51 wards, SAD on 29Meanwhile, those present in the meeting from SAD included SAD Jalandhar Rural president Ajit Singh Kohar, SAD Jalandhar urban president Kulwant Singh Mannan, ex-MLA Sarabjit Singh Makkar, Baljit Singh Neelamahal. Among the BJP, ex- MLAs KD Bhandari, Manoranjan Kalia and Mohinder Bhagat, Rakesh Rathore and BJP district president Ramesh Sharma were present.
